When Are You Done With a Lesson?

If you can play through the material smoothly, both hands, in time,
you are ready to move on.

Here is your filter:
Does it feel easy? Can you play it without thinking?

If yes, go ahead.

If not, stay a little longer. Focus. Make it smoother. Sharper.

Kenny Werner once said the real reason people don’t improve is because they try to move forward before they’re ready.
He often says, “What you’re practicing should feel as effortless as playing a C major triad.”
That’s your signal.

If you are still thinking while playing, you are not done yet.
And that is perfectly fine.

This is not about doing everything.
It’s about knowing when to move on and when to stay.

If you did only the first exercise in this course, and really did it, you would improve.
If you rushed through it just to get to the next one, you wouldn’t.

You can say, “I completed ten lessons and nothing changed.”
Or you can say, “I spent the week on one line and something shifted in my rhythm.”

That’s the difference.
That’s the work.
