Proper Pedal Technique

Since my piano tutorial videos are recorded from overhead views, this is actually the only lesson where you will see what I am doing with my feet when I use the pedal. In this video, I’ll demonstrate the correct way to use the sustain pedal and highlight some common mistakes to avoid.

Correct Pedal Technique

Heel Down: Always keep your heel on the ground for stability and control.

Smooth and Gentle: Press and release the pedal smoothly and gently. Aim to change the pedal soundlessly, avoiding any abrupt movements.

Silent Operation: Ensure your pedaling is silent, avoiding any mechanical noise or distractions.

Common Mistakes

Sudden and High Release:

Issue: Releasing the pedal suddenly and at a high angle.

Consequence: This creates an abrupt change in sound and disrupts the musical flow.

Intense Pushing:

Issue: Pressing the pedal too forcefully, which generates unwanted mechanical noises.

Consequence: This can be distracting and interfere with the purity of the piano sound.

Heel Elevated:

Issue: Keeping your heel elevated while pressing the pedal.

Consequence: This reduces control and can lead to inconsistent pedaling and added tension in your leg.

Practical Exercises

1. Heel Contact Exercise: Place your heel firmly on the ground and practice moving your foot up and down without lifting the heel. This will help develop the correct motion.

2. Smooth Pedaling Practice: Practice pressing and releasing the pedal slowly and gently to develop control. Do this without playing any keys at first, focusing on making the motion as silent as possible.
