Lesson 14: Composition

What Will You Learn in This Lesson?

Take the six patterns from Lesson 12 and add space between each one:

One bar plays. One bar rests.
That’s the basic idea.
But feel free to stretch it.

Let your “play” last a little longer. Make the “rest” shorter.

To keep things simple and musical, we’re using call and response again.

The first two bars ask a question. The next two give an answer.

The goal is the same as always:
Stay grounded. Stay relaxed.
Keep the groove.

When Are You Done With This Lesson?

Three ways to finish. Choose one, or all.

— One: Play along with the full video from start to finish. No mistakes.
— Two: Use the sheet music and play through this piece at 86 BPM with a metronome.
Three: Write your own 16-bar piece using the six patterns. Play it at 86 BPM.

If you choose option 3, stick with the call and response format.

In earlier lessons, I kept saying you didn’t need to worry about making it musical,
because the rules were tight and that made it hard.

Now it’s different.
With the tools in this lesson, you can actually create something that sounds really good.
Have fun!
