3. Playing A with Quarter Notes

What Will You Learn in This Lesson?

In this lesson, we’ll focus on just one note: A.

Your Guided Practice Routine

This video shows you exactly how to practice, so just follow along from start to finish.
When I count out loud, count with me.
When I switch to both hands, do the same.
And when I stop counting, you can stop too.

Q&A: Why This Lesson Matters & How to Practice It

Q: Why should I practice with a backing track?
A: It’s one of the simplest ways to improve your rhythm, because it gives you constant feedback on whether you’re ahead, behind,
or right on time.

Q: I find it hard to play along with the video. It feels too fast. What should I do?
A: That’s completely normal. When that happens, first just watch the video so you understand what is asked from you.
Then, before trying to play along with the video, follow this step-by-step approach:

Step 1: Play the right hand while counting out loud.

Step 2: Play the left hand while counting out loud.

Step 3: Play both hands together while counting out loud.

Step 4: Play both hands without counting, but keep a steady beat.
Once that feels comfortable, go back to playing along with the video.

Q: I can play it on my own, but I can’t do it with the video.
A: This happens to many beginners.
The moving orange line and the highlighted notes make your eyes chase the visuals, and that often throws your rhythm off.
Try printing the sheet music, restart the video, and this time don’t look at the screen.
Just listen to the audio and follow the notes on the page.
