I Deleted 80% of Module 1 👀

After I rebuilt Modules 2, 3, and 4 last year, I had a problem:
Module 1 didn’t match them anymore.

Modules 2, 3, and 4 were lean. Visual. Fast.
Module 1 was heavy on text, multiple tasks per lesson, slower to complete.

And Module 1 is what everyone sees first.

If someone tries it and decides “oh, this is one of those text-heavy courses,”
they’re gone before they see how the rest actually works.

So I went back and stripped it down.

The Problem With Text

When I first built Module 1, I explained everything with long descriptions and tons of text.
I thought that’s what clarity looked like.

Then I started getting feedback:
students would open a lesson, see the wall of text, and just watch the video instead.
The text wasn’t helping. It was friction.

Somewhere around Module 2, I realized something: one picture beats five sentences.

So I went back to Module 1 and asked: what’s the minimum text needed?

Answer: 20% of what I wrote.

What I Cut

  • Every description that took 5-6 minutes to read? Now it’s 1-2 minutes. Usually less.
  • I replaced paragraphs with pictures. Removed every word that wasn’t doing real work.
  • I used to make you play exercises 3-5 times without mistakes, plus extra exercises on top of that.
Now it’s one task and you move on.

The One Thing I Added That You’ll Hate

You have to complete lessons in order now. No jumping around.

I know. It’s annoying.

Here’s why I did it: when you skip around, you create gaps you can’t see.
You skip something that seems basic, then three lessons later you’re confused because the foundation is missing.

You can’t see which lessons depend on each other. I can. So I’m locking the order.

The Point

I used to think good teaching meant explaining everything in depth.
Now I think good teaching means getting out of your way.

Module 1 is 80% shorter. You’ll learn it twice as fast.
If it feels light, easy, and fast, I did my job.

What’s Next

Module 5 launches in March. It’s the last module on blues improvisation before we move into harmony in Module 6.
Once it’s out, you’ll have a solid foundation in improvisation.
