Get Started

Lock in with metronome, walking bass, and drum grooves.

You hit play on a backing track and something feels off. You’re rushing. Or dragging. Or you keep losing the rhythm once it gets a little more complex. You hear it, but you don’t know what to do about it.

This is where you learn how.

In The Rhythm Lab I assume you know nothing about rhythm. I assume you have every possible issue someone can have with rhythm, and I address you like that. We start with the simplest thing, quarter notes, and we build from there.

Here’s what mastering a rhythm means to me. You can keep a steady pulse. You can read and count it. You can play it with a metronome, with a walking bass, and with a real drum groove under you. Three settings. Same rhythm. If you can do all three, you’ve got it.

Each section in The Rhythm Lab works the same way. Four lessons.

1. Lock In.

We play the rhythm together against a walking bass, then a funk groove, then a metronome.
No variations. Just the pulse.

2. Count Out Loud.

I take you through every exercise and you count the rhythm out loud as we play. By the end you know the rhythms so well you won’t need anyone to show you how to play them.

3. Trade With Me.

I play each exercise twice. The piano drops out,
and you play it back.

4. On Your Own.

Just the rhythm section and you. No safety net.
If you can play the whole section clean, you’re done.
If you can’t, go back and find the lesson where it fell apart.

How to use it

Start with On Your Own first.
If you can play the whole thing clean against all three backings, skip the section.
If you can’t, work through the four lessons in order and find your weak spot.

The Rhythm Lab is open.
New sections get added regularly.
Start with Quarter Notes.
